FDA Compliance and the Medical Device Industry

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is an agency of the United States federal government which exists to protect and promote the health of consumers. US and foreign based manufacturers and importers of certain products must ensure the FDA compliance of their goods. Foreign companies who attempt to sell their goods in the US risk having their products held in customs custody if they are not compliant.

Amongst other products, the FDA is responsible for approving for sale food products, drugs for both human and animal consumption and medical devices. This is why FDA compliance is of particular importance in the pharmaceutical and medical device industries. A product with FDA compliance has been the subject of very specific tests and examinations relating to its safety and efficacy. This means that the FDA has approved the product for distribution and sale.

Within the pharmaceutical and medical device industries, FDA compliance comes with a number or requirements. For example, it is a requirement that manufacturers and distributors of medical devices register every year with the FDA.

One of the requirements for FDA compliance in the medical devices industry is that good manufacturing practices are met. Ensuring that this is the case allows the FDA to ensure that medical devices meet the appropriate requirements consistently. In order to ensure FDA compliance, the organisation inspects manufacturing facilities to check for compliance with its specified methods of designing, purchasing, manufacturing, packaging, storing, labelling and installing of medical devices.

Ultimately, the FDA regulates every aspect of the medical device industry from design and manufacture, to testing, even labelling. This means that manufacturers must ensure the FDA compliance of any labelling on a product of its packaging as well as in any literature that accompanies the device.

The organisation continues to monitor devices after FDA compliance has been established. This means that in the event of any problems or questions arising, they can be dealt with safely and effectively.
