What Is Ames in America?
The great city of Ames is located in Iowa state in America. The amount of people living in Ames was fifty thousand, seven hundred and thirty one, as of the 2000 census. You will be very interested to know that Ames was first formed in 1864 right on a station stop on a railroad line. The city was built in a location that would make it convenient to build a railway crossing across the skunk river.
There are several things that make Ames recognizable to many Americans, mostly the book The Girls from Ames. Ames is also home to the Iowa State University of Science and Technology, and many people living in the city are students. The Iowa Department of Transportation is also located in Ames. And also, it is worth mentioning that the Animal and Plant Health and Inspection Service is located in Ames, and it employs quite a few people.
The city, interestingly enough, still covers a relatively small area of only 55 point 9 square kilometers. It is located on the cross pacific railroad of the Union Pacific Railroad, around 48 kilometers from Des Moines. Ames is an enjoyable and relaxing city to live in because of its humid continental climate.
Ames is quite well known for its transportation system, as it is the only city in Iowa that a state highway does not go through. US highways 30 and 69 do however serve the city. There is also a municipal airport about one and a half kilometres out from the city. One thing that many people recognize Ames for is CyRide, which is the transit system that takes people from one part of the town to another.
There are many famous people you may have heard of that were born in Ames, or still live there. Just a couple major celebrities from Ames are Harrison Barnes (basketball player), and Brian Evenson. To people who live in places like New York, Ames seems like a pretty small place. But it is constantly growing, and a few decades from now it could easily surpass 100K people. A lot of astronauts and scientists (and people trying to become scientists) live in Ames, because of the Iowa State University.
By now you probably want to know how the economy of Ames turns, and what types of businesses you will find there. A city this big has to have a variety of Ames electricians, Ames dentists and Ames plumbers to serve the population. Citizens of Ames are able to get all the things they want in terms of industry and businesses. In Ames you will find a lot of good restaurants of different types, so it is not hard to find a good place to go out and eat at. In my time in Ames I have found every service I have ever wanted, as you would expect from a city that houses over 50,000 people.
So you may be wondering if you should visit Ames. If you are purely doing it as a tourist destination, you may not find it that interesting. But if you plan to study at Iowa state university, then you need to come live here. The city of Ames also has fairly low crime rates and friendly people. The city is a recommended place to live in regardless of your age. And perhaps the best part is that real estate prices are quite low in this city. You can buy a house for just a couple hundred thousand.
