Many people would consider football to be the number one ranked sport in the world. They would be wrong. Billiards is, not football. Since, the introduction of the game, the number of people who regularly engage billiards has risen greatly. Many people appreciate the game because of its easy and easy to grasp rules. Unlike physical sports such as lawn tennis that require some physical prowess or games of strategy such as chess, billiards are open to anyone regardless of their age or sex. It is because of this that many homes today can be found with rooms which have been designed for the playing of this sport. Billiards is a rather simple game. Billiards tables are available in four different sizes. These range between seven feet to nine feet. The balls used in playing the game can be made from different materials. In the past, the game used to be played with balls made from ivory or wood. Today however, many of the balls which are used are manufactured from phenolic resin. During game play, chalk is often applied for the reduction of the frictional effect that occurs between the cue stick and the bridge being formed by the players hand. Doing this is however optional and not a fixed rule of the game.
Billiard rooms can be designed in different ways and as such most homes end up having various versions. Classic designs of these rooms are normally found to include wooden cabinets, billiard clocks and some billiard signs. Today however, it is not uncommon for rooms to also include modern appliances such as televisions and CD holders. Some people might consider the addition of wall art in order to enhance the visual appeal of the game room. The use of table lights are almost essential in the construction of the room. These lights are available in different shapes and sizes. They can either be sited over the table or placed against the wall. Regardless of its postion, it is vital that they provide sufficient and adequate lighting for the game to be played.
Today there are many international championships that promote the game; in such events, people play against each other professionally in a series of games for an eventual winner. However, despite the undeniable appeal of these competitions, the real joy of playing billiards is not found in the design of the room or the halls of a tournament. It is instead found in the joys of friendship and unspoken communication that can be found between two people who are simply knocking the game around.
