As the first decade for NASCAR, and a time when some drivers made the first NASCAR history, the 50’s can be considered a time of legend for the sport. Top stars of the time had their own share of accomplishments just as today’s drivers, such as Jeff Gordon, are making their own legacy in NASCAR.
Many young up and comers matured into stars and even superstars in the 1960’s. Richard Petty won Championships numbers one and two in the 60’s prior to winning a total of seven, while David Pearson started a career that would leave him as #2 on the all time list of Winston Cup Series winners – known as NASCAR Grand National at the time.

The 1970’s were spectacular years for the sport of NASCAR. History was made when Cale Yarborough won Winston Cup Championships three straight years. But even that achievement paled in comparison to Richard Petty’s five titles, including winning by an amazing 722 points in 1975. He didn’t win three in a row, but he did win two years in a row twice in the 70’s.
The 80’s marked the birth of yet more NASCAR legends. Dale Earnhardt, with three championships, traded dominant years with Darrel Waltrip. Through that dominance they brought a host of new fans and new media attention to the sport, vaulting it into the mainstream. And don’t forget Bobby Allison and his championship run in 1983.
The big three professional sports added NASCAR to become the big four professional sports in the 1990’s. NASCAR enjoyed stratospheric attendance and television ratings in this decade of closely contended races and series championships.
